John was House Surgeon and Medical Registrar at Auckland Hospital 1940 - 1942.
After WW2 service with the RNZAF in the Pacific (1942-45), John went to England for PG training. He was Medical Registrar at King George Hospital, Ilford 1946 - 1948.
He returned to NZ in 1949 to take up the position of Visiting Assistant Physician, Cardiology Department, Wellington Hospital.
He was appointed Visiting Physician, Wellington Hospital and Sub-Dean, Wellington Branch Faculty in 1951.
