After house surgeon years at Wellington Hospital, John spent three years in general practice in Miramar before travelling overseas for further experience.
He was Clinical Assistant in General Medicine, Cardiology and Hypertension at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh during 1957
He returned to Wellington and was appointed, in 1958, Visiting Physician, Hypertension Clinic, Wellington Hospital, a position he held until 1978.
He was later appointed to report ECGs one day / week.
