Born Carmarthenshire, Wales 1848 Died Wellington 24 Jul 1916 Educated at the Grammar Schools in Carmarthen and Haverfordwest. Studied medicine at St Bart's Hospital, London, where he became gold medallist in clinical medicine in 1871. Also studied at the Royal Ophthalmic Hospital. First registered as a medical practitioner in NZ 22 Apr 1873, initially settling in Reefton. Surgeon at the Reefton Hospital 1874 - 1876 Practised in Hokitika 1876 - 1884, and from 1878 to 1884 was Surgeon Superintendent at the Westland Hospital. Returned to England in 1884 for three years, gaining positions as Clinical Assistant at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital, the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital, and the Hospital for Women, Soho Square W.
