Born Islington, London April 1841 Died Wellington 15 Jan 1885 Early medical practice in the colliery districts of the north of England. From 1870, Chief, Harbour Medical Staff, Bombay, India Ill-health forced him to return to England around 1872 1873 came to NZ as surgeon on the 'Wild Duck', settling in Wellington Honorary Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1879 - 1885. Resigned in 1884 over a difference in opinion with the Colonial Secretary, but subsequently agreed to resume that position. Well-respected for his charitable medical work. Surgeon-Captain with the Ambulance Corps at Parihaka; Doctor to the Naval Brigade, Surgeon to Wellington contingent NZ Naval Artillery, and attached to the armed constabulary.
