Educated at Berkamstead School, Middlesex. Medical studies at University College Hospital, London Awarded the Jelf Medal in 1914 for the most brilliant student in science in all London Medical Schools During WW1, served with the NZMC in Belgium Assistant Surgeon to Dr Henry Pickerill in the maxillo-facial surgery hospital at Sidcup, Surrey 1918 - 1919 When Dr Pickerill moved this unit to Dunedin in 1919, Sydney went with him and they worked together there He then went to the Hanmer Military Hospital, Hanmer Springs, working there until 1921 when he returned to England to undertake postgraduate surgical studies at St Georges' Hospital Honorary Visiting Physician, Wellington Hospital 1924 - 1925 Honorary Visiting Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1925-1940 Visiting Surgeon, Wellington Hospital 1940-1946 Senior Visiting Surgeon, Hutt Hospital 1946-1953 Known by his friends and colleagues as 'Tommy' Editor of the NZMJ 1937 - 1939, and Editor-in-Chief 1946 - 1956 President, NZ branch BMA 1948 photograph courtesy J O Mercer collectionObituary: NZMJ 1956 55:411 BMJ 1956 2:715 Medical Journal of Australia 1956 2:874 |
