After one year as a house surgeon in NZ, he went to UK where he worked in Nottingham. He obtained the FRCS (Eng) at the age of 25 in 1933. He returned to NZ at the end of 1934 to take up the appointment of Resident Surgeon, Wellington Hospital from 1 Jan 1935. This post involved him in a wide range of general surgery. From 1940, he undertook a majority of the paediatric surgery at the hospital. He undertook the first operation in NZ for patent ductus arteriosus ligation, on 16 May 1944 at Wellington Hospital. This was on a patient with infective endarteritis, who made a complete recovery. Six weeks later, he performed the first pericardiectomy in Wellington. He resigned on 31 May 1946, moving to Auckland.
