Educated at Stratford High School HP / HS Auckland Hospital 1955-1956 Postgraduate training in the UK. His initial posting was for 18 months on an orthopaedic run. He then moved to general surgery and urology in Southend. He then enrolled in a three year training programme at the Institute of Urology in London. For this he was based at St Pauls Hospital but also rotated through the Marsden and the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond St. At the Hammersmith Hospital Research Unit, working under Geoff Chisholm, Donald focused on renal transplantation. Admitting and Outpatients Medical Officer Wellington Hospital 1966. Visiting Urologist, Wellington Hospital 1967 - 1994 He continued work on renal transplantation using an animal model at the Wallaceville Research Unit. Performed the first renal transplantation at Wellington Hospital in 1968.
